 1.     How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?

My commercial was showing the products of Crayola. The mood that my group and I wanted to create was a happy and playful mood to be similar to the ones that are usually in the actual Crayola commercial. In most Crayola commercials, it often includes kids using whatever product that they are trying to promote. They usually use bright, colorful backgrounds and fun, upbeat music. There where common conventions shown throughout the commercial, especially in the opening scene, which was where we showed the different artwork that was created, and the ending scene contained the Crayola prop, which was clearly shown to the audience. During the editing phase, I wanted to make sure that the scenes contained bright color, because most commercials that are aimed towards kids often include bright and playful colors to help attract them to the product. The conventions in the commercial helps show the main idea of a Crayola commercial, which is to express the creativity that young kids can create, and how Crayola was used to allow kids to express creativity throughout artwork, and color.

2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

The aimed audience of the commercial is for kids, more towards kids in elementary school. I made sure to include fun music and appealing colors to help attract kids to like the product and want to buy it. Because Crayola is a kid friendly product, and not very appealing to young adults or adults, it would most likely be distributed on a kid’s channel such as Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, PBS etc.

3.     How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

Taking Media studies has helped improve my production skills. The commercial project is the first project that we have had that has allowed us to use the filming vocabulary that we have learned, and to use the different filming angles and shots that we were interested in and wanted to present in the commercial.  This project has also taught me how to be able to make a good commercial while considering the atmosphere and props that we are able to choose. Because the commercial had to be filmed in school, I had to think about how we could create a good quality commercial with only using our phones, and the limited supplies that we have at school. A strength of my commercial is that Crayola is often used in a school setting, so it was almost better to shoot at the school, rather than another setting such as home.

4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

I integrated technology into my commercial by filming on an iPhone 12 pro max, which is pretty good quality, and we edited our commercial using iMovie. The iPhone picked up a clear image, and we were also able to edit the video to make it look brighter and cut or crop anything out of the videos that we didn’t like or need. iMovie was a simple editing tool that was easy for my group to use. iMovie has the option to put in different transitions, and I was also able to put in the split screen effect that we wanted to include in the first few scenes of the commercial. I also got the music using YouTube, and the editor of my group was able to put the music over the commercial.
